Study Questions for Smith Moral Sentiments

1. Where does Smith find the fundamental principles of morals.
compare with texts such as Plato, Christian texts, Machiavelli. 

2. What is the 'impartial observer' and how does that person differ from the person exploring sentiments?

3.  Smith is entirely secular, but if God were assumed to be the authority that specified what morals should guide us, what would Smith be telling us about where we should find God?

4. If Smith is right about where one can find morals, are they distinct to a city, a religion, or shared by all?


Application 1: How would Smith criticize the beheading of hostages by ISIS?
